Writing

At Eaton, we strive to inspire children to become confident, impactful and thoughtful writers. Through a rich and varied curriculum, we provide children with the skills and tools to create stories, express themselves, and articulate their ideas and opinions about the world around them. We want every child to discover the joy of writing and appreciate the wealth of knowledge, creativity and expressivity it can bring.

Handwriting and Spelling

Through dedicated handwriting and spelling lessons, we explicitly teach the transcriptional skills children need, while developing the fine and gross motor skills that underpin successful writing. Strategies such as hand warm-ups, dictation and free writing help to build writing stamina, fluency and accuracy.

Writing and Texts Used

We use Literacy Tree as our writing scheme, providing children with a rich variety of high-quality texts that inspire a love of writing and support learning across the curriculum. The carefully selected texts promote diversity and cultural understanding by reflecting a wide range of cultures, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Our purpose-driven writing lessons give children opportunities to write for a range of audiences and purposes, sharing their work in meaningful contexts. Throughout each writing sequence, children are taught to edit and revise their work, developing the reflective and independent habits needed to become effective writers.

How we celebrate and promote a love of writing

We believe that writing should be shared, celebrated and valued. Through regular writing assemblies, we provide opportunities for pupils to share their work in its intended context, developing their confidence, creativity and voice as writers. These assemblies inspire the next generation of journalists, authors and expressive young people, while celebrating the power of words to inform, move and influence others. Each term, we recognise and celebrate our writers, acknowledging their dedication, joy and the lasting impact that writing can have on both individuals and the wider community.
